Risks of Uninsured Driving

Car insurance laws and requirements vary from state to state, but most states have a financial responsibility law that dictates the level of insurance drivers of that state should have.  During today’s tough economy, reduction of car insurance rates is one place where people look to save money.  While comparing quotes is a good idea, forgoing insurance altogether can result in even greater financial headaches.  Even if you do not drive often, driving without insurance can be an expensive mistake.

Accident Financial Responsibility

If you are involved in an at-fault accident while driving uninsured, you can be held personally responsible for all medical and damage expenses. While the cost of a monthly insurance premium may be hard to bear, it is no comparison to the potential thousands of out-of-pocket dollars necessary to pay for the effects of the accident.  These expenses can also occur if your insurance coverage does not meet the state minimum requirements.

Legal Repercussions

In addition to personal financial responsibility, most states mandate insurance as a legal responsibility.  Failure to show proof of insurance at the time of an accident or routine traffic stop can result in hefty fines, driving privilege suspension and/or community service requirements.  Multiple offenders can even face jail time.  Your driving record will also be affected by uninsured driving.  Most states add at least three points to your driving record for each offense.

Future Insurance Trouble

If you have a history of uninsured driving, it can be very difficult to find affordable car insurance coverage in the future.  Insurance companies run background and driving record checks, and the criminal charges and points against your license are a sure sign of risk for insurers. Some insurance companies will not even qualify applicants with a history of uninsured driving.  Outside of the insurance difficulty, purchasing a new can will also become a challenge, as most finance companies require proof of insurance before you can take delivery of the vehicle.
